Those who thus pride themselves on being \u201cbroadminded\u201d (i.e., \u201cliberal\u201d) often hurl <em>legalist<\/em> at those who emphasize the necessity of obedience to God\u2019s Word. The notorious scribes and Pharisees of Jesus\u2019 time are commonly depicted as \u201clegalists.\u201d If their behavior constitutes legalism, we should be quick to avoid it and even expose and rebuke it, as He so often did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But just what is legalism? This term is not in the Bible, but <em>Webster\u2019s New Collegiate Dictionary<\/em> defines it as \u201cstrict, literal, or excessive conformity to the law or to a religious or moral code.\u201d It seems fair to question the possibility of an \u201cexcessive conformity under consideration. How can one \u201cexcessively\u201d obey Holy Writ? Is not \u201cstrict, literal conformity\u201d exactly what the Lord Jesus requires of us if we would be saved? Consider a mere sampling of the plethora of passages that so indicate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cNot every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven\u201d (Mat. 7:21). Did Jesus mean some, much, most, or all of His Father\u2019s will?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAnd why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?\u201d (Luke 6:46). Does Jesus allow us to cast aside His words with which we disagree, or does He expect \u201cstrict conformity\u201d to all of them?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus will render \u201cvengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus\u201d (2 The. 1:8). May we pick and choose which parts of the Gospel to obey, or must we obey all of it to escape the Lord\u2019s avenging Judgment against sin and sinners?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAnd having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation\u201d (Heb. 5:9). May men merely \u201cobey\u201d Jesus casually or partially and still be saved?\u201d Is such an approach \u201cobedience\u201d at all?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0While Jesus often rebuked the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy, when did He ever rebuke them for their \u201cstrict, literal, or excessive conformity to God\u2019s law\u201d? Rather, He rebuked them for <strong>failing<\/strong> and\/or <strong>refusing<\/strong> to adhere to it. They elevated their own opinions and traditions to the level of Divine precept, thereby violating and voiding it (Mat. 15:3, 6\u20139).
