{"id":10843,"date":"2021-01-04T22:12:29","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T22:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=10843"},"modified":"2025-09-30T14:13:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T14:13:06","slug":"this-conscience-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=10843","title":{"rendered":"\u201c\u2026This Conscience Thing\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Views: 1<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">[<strong>Note: \u00a0<\/strong>This MS is available in<strong> \u00a0<\/strong>larger font on our <strong>Brief Articles 2<\/strong>\u00a0page.]<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In 2015, Pro-life, anti-abortion members of Congress proposed the \u201cProtect Life Act\u201d in an effort \u201c\u2026to prohibit the provision of federal education funding to state or local educational agencies that make health services available to students through school-based health centers unless those centers certify that they will not provide students with abortions, abortion-related materials or referrals or directions to abortion services.\u201c U.S.\u00a0 House of Representatives member, Nancy Pelosi, described such prohibition as \u201csavage\u201d (an amazing irony!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She further stated that the problem with those who oppose abortion is that \u201cthey have this conscience thing.\u201d Her words, apparently meant as an insult to those who oppose abortion are, in fact, true. Yes, we have \u201cthis conscience thing.\u201d By implication, Rep. Pelosi admitted that she and her pro-death cohorts are <strong>without conscience<\/strong> when it comes to destroying human life in its most vulnerable stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Pelosi statement calls attention to the conscience. What is it?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em>Conscience<\/em><\/strong><strong> translates a Greek word that means \u201cto see together.\u201d<\/strong> Our English word means \u201cto know with.\u201d It refers to an internal response, pro or con, to one\u2019s behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The conscience is a behavior evaluator, not a behavior standard. <\/strong>No one is born with an innate sense of right and wrong, good and evil, truth and error. If we instinctively knew such, moral and religious teaching would be unnecessary. The Bible would be superfluous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The conscience reflects one\u2019s moral\/religious teaching and conviction.<\/strong> It is therefore a creature of one\u2019s education and conviction. It makes a person feel guilty when he violates his convictions. It makes one feel honorable when he behaves in accordance with his convictions. However, its responses regarding one\u2019s behavior do not indicate the behavior\u2019s rightness or wrongness, but only one\u2019s <strong>conviction<\/strong> that a given act is right or wrong. The apostle Paul, as Saul of Tarsus, was taught\u2014and sincerely believed\u2014that Jesus Christ was a false prophet and that His church should be destroyed, which he sought to do with great zeal (Acts 8:1\u20133; 9:1\u20132). He had a \u201cgood conscience\u201d concerning this persecution at the time he was doing it (23:1). When he reached the conviction that Jesus was God\u2019s Son and his Savior, he thenceforth had a \u201cgood conscience\u201d in his promotion of the Christ he had formerly persecuted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The conscience can be abused.<\/strong> One can \u201cbrand\u201d or \u201csear\u201d it so as to render it insensitive (1 Tim. 4:2). One can \u201cdefile\u201d it (Tit. 1:15). It will eventually cease to warn and condemn if a person repeatedly ignores its warnings. He will then cease to be bothered with \u201cthis conscience thing\u201d (a` la Rep. Pelosi).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Bible is the only perfect source of Truth concerning religion and morals.
