That the men who wrote our Bill of Rights and Constitution\u2014and who were among its earliest office-holders\u2014were men who believed in God and who were greatly influenced by the teachings of the Bible\u2014and of Christ in particular\u2014is simply a matter of fact. Only dishonest or grossly ignorant men will deny this historical fact, as the following illustrations attest:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Patrick Henry, not only closed his famous speech in St. John\u2019s Church in Richmond, Virginia, in 1775, with \u201cGive me liberty or give me death,\u201d but in the same speech, he also invoked \u201cGod,\u201d \u201cthe majesty of heaven,\u201d and \u201cAlmighty God\u201d to witness the justice of their cause. Further, he also paraphrased and applied two passages of Scripture in the same speech.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Thomas Jefferson, though reputed to be a Deist, wrote to Benjamin Rush I 1803: \u201cTo the corruptions of Christianity I am indeed opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian, in the only sense he wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines, in preference to all others\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Benjamin Franklin, signer of the Declaration of Independence, wrote the following in a 1754 pamphlet addressed to Europeans considering moving to America: \u201cAtheism is unknown there; Infidelity rare and secret; so that persons may live to a great age in that country without having their piety shocked by meeting with either an Atheist or an Infidel. And the Divine Being seems\u2026pleased to favor the whole country.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">George Washington, \u201cFather of the nation,\u201d was a devout believer in God, as his biographies amply document.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">James Madison, principal author of our Constitution, wrote in his late years that \u201cbelief in a God All Powerful wise and good, is so essential to the moral order of the World and to the happiness of man, that arguments which enforce it cannot be drawn from too many sources.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">John Adams, our second president, once addressed military leaders as follows: \u201cOur constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">John Jay, first Supreme Court Chief Justice, later, president of the American Bible Society, wrote in 1816: \u201cProvidence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of our Christian Nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">All 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence believed in the God of the Bible, as evidenced by their numerous positive references to Him.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The evidence of the faith in God, the Bible, and Jesus that guided the principles our Founding Fathers built into our Constitution is massive.
