{"id":2599,"date":"2017-12-22T12:42:36","date_gmt":"2017-12-22T12:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=2599"},"modified":"2024-08-15T17:53:12","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T17:53:12","slug":"the-church-was-not-an-afterthought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=2599","title":{"rendered":"The Church Was Not an &#8220;Afterthought&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Views: 1<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">[<strong>Note: <\/strong>This MS is available in larger font on our <strong>Brief Articles<\/strong> page.]<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Many anti-Scriptural concepts of the church exist (e.g., denominationalism, that one can serve Jesus apart from His church [i.e., <em>Jesus, yes\u2014the church, no<\/em>], that the church\u2019s principal work is to supply the physical and\/or social needs of mankind, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Another egregious misconception depicts Jesus\u2019 church as a mere \u201cafterthought\u201d in the mind of God. This error is part of the premillennial theological system. It alleges that Jesus will return before (thus <em>pre<\/em>) He establishes an earthly kingdom that will exist for 1,000 years (thus <em>millennial<\/em>). Premillennialists argue that Jesus intended to establish an earthly kingdom at His first advent, but His fellow Jews prevented Him from doing so by rejecting and crucifying Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Amazingly, they say that God did not expect this rejection, and in scrambling for a back-up plan for this \u201cemergency,\u201d He came up with the church to suffice until Christ could return to earth a second time and establish His kingdom. This doctrine implies that the church was a mere afterthought to God, a substitute for the kingdom of the prophets. This concept denies at least the following doctrines of Holy Writ:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>God\u2019s omniscience and foreknowledge: <\/strong>If God was \u201csurprised\u201d by Jesus\u2019 rejection, He is hardly omniscient and foreknowing as the Bible consistently declares Him to be. No, God was not surprised; He had Isaiah prophesy seven centuries before Jesus\u2019 birth that He would be \u201cdespised and rejected\u201d (53:3).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Jesus\u2019 veracity: <\/strong>He repeatedly told the apostles that the Jewish leaders would crucify Him (Luke 9:22, et al.). Yet He stated forcefully that His <strong>kingdom <\/strong>would be established in the lifetime of His contemporaries (Mark. 9:1). Did He lie to the apostles or merely fail?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The kingdom\u2019s nature: <\/strong>When John and Jesus came preaching, \u201cthe kingdom of heaven is at hand,\u201d the Jews inferred a glorious and powerful earthly kingdom, such as David\u2019s and Solomon\u2019s. The people sought to force such a crown upon Jesus, but He refused it (John 6:15). He plainly told Pontius Pilate, \u201cMy kingdom is not of this world\u201d (18:36).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>The kingdom-church identity: <\/strong>When Jesus promised to build His church, He immediately called it \u201cthe kingdom of heaven\u201d (Mat. 16:18\u201319; cf. Heb. 12:23, 28). The kingdom existed in the first century (Col. 1:18; Rev. 1:9). The church is no <strong>substitute for <\/strong>the kingdom\u2014it <strong>is <\/strong>Jesus\u2019 spiritual kingdom on earth, which He came to build, and over which He <strong>now <\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>God\u2019s eternal purpose: <\/strong>The church of Christ is according to God\u2019s \u201c<strong>eternal<\/strong> purpose,\u201d rather than some mere <strong>temporary<\/strong> measure, through His Son (Eph. 3:10\u201311, emph.
