{"id":2672,"date":"2018-01-17T00:17:49","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T00:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=2672"},"modified":"2023-04-17T15:42:26","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T15:42:26","slug":"do-you-love-jesus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=2672","title":{"rendered":"Do You Love Jesus?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Views: 0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">[<strong>Note: <\/strong>This MS is available in larger font on our <strong>Brief Articles 1<\/strong> page.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The apostle Paul lent significance to the question above as he wrote: \u201cIf any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema\u2026\u201d (1 Cor. 16:22). <em>Anathema<\/em> means \u201caccursed,\u201d and thus under the condemnation of God. Paul earlier explained that love for others is defined by action, rather than merely by words (13:4\u20137; cf. 1 John 3:18). This principle is no less true regarding one\u2019s love for the Christ. The larger body of\u00a0 the New Testament provides some benchmarks by which we may gauge our love (or lack thereof) for God and His Son.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We must not love the world:<\/strong> \u201cLove not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him\u201d (1 John 2:15). <em>The World<\/em> here is not the earth or its inhabitants, but the <strong>behavior<\/strong> of a world separated from God by sin. Most people live for themselves rather than to honor Jesus. There is no love of Him in such lives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We must love one another:<\/strong> \u201cIf a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar\u2026\u201d (1 John 4:20a; 2:9). While <em>brother<\/em>here refers to fellow-Christians, every other human being is a \u201cbrother\u201d in the human family. As God loved all mankind (John 3:16), so should we. Love for others is not necessarily affection or close association, but also seeking their best interests\u2014even the best interests of our enemies (Mat. 5:44).<\/li>\n<li><strong>We must love the things He loved.<\/strong> Those who claim to love Jesus and to abide in Him \u201cought\u2026to walk even as he walked\u201d (1 John 2:6). One who does not love Truth, righteousness, the souls of those who are lost, or the church of Christ is a hypocrite to claim to love the Lord\u2014He loved all of these. One who says, \u201cJesus yes, but the church, no,\u201d confesses his lack of love for Jesus; He \u201cloved the church, and gave himself up for it\u201d (Eph. 5:25).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We must keep His commandments:<\/strong> \u201cIf ye love me, ye will keep my commandments\u201d (John 14:15; cf. 21). This simple test is the all-embracing one, separating the sincere\/serious disciple from the pretending hypocrite. Although misguided theologians have sought to strip almost every vestige of law or authority from the Gospel, these words of Jesus remain unchanged. He further emphasized the necessity of obedience in the same context: \u201cHe that loveth me not keepeth not my words\u2026\u201d (v. 24a). As Jesus drew His Sermon on the Mount to a close, He said: It is not those who merely call Him \u201cLord,\u201d but those who obey the Divine will, who will be saved (Mat. 7:23). And His rhetorical question still rings down through the corridors of time: \u201cWhy call ye, Lord and do not the things which I say?\u201d (Luke 6:46).
