He responded by accusing them of violating God\u2019s commandments by their human traditions, and cited one of their traditions as proof (vv. 3\u20136). He then excoriated them as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men (vv. 7\u20139).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Upon reading His scathing rebuke of such hypocrisy among His contemporaries, it is only natural to inquire if such hypocrisy exists today. If so, Jesus\u2019 rebuke of its modern versions is no less powerful and appropriate. Notably, those against whom Jesus originally railed were religious leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">They professed <strong>orally<\/strong> to be servants of God, but their behavior proved that their hearts were far removed from their lips. They were \u201ctalking the talk,\u201d but not at all \u201cwalking the walk\u201d of true religion. Things have changed little from then to now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Modern <strong>religious leaders<\/strong> routinely \u201chonor with the lips\u201d the God and Savior Whose authority they despise by flouting His revealed will. For example,<strong> religious leaders<\/strong> say:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cOne church is as good as another\u201d (implying that all of them have Jesus\u2019 approval), but <strong>Jesus said<\/strong> He would build only <strong>one <\/strong>church, of which He is head and Savior (Mat. 16:18; Eph. 1:22\u201323; 5:23).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">All the conflicting doctrines and practices of denominationalism are God\u2019s will, <strong>but<\/strong> <strong>the New Testament demands<\/strong> uniformity of doctrine and practice (John 17:20\u201321; 1 Cor. 1:10; Gal. 1:8\u20139; Eph. 4:3; et al.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Sinners may be saved by saying \u201cthe sinner\u2019s prayer,\u201d <strong>but<\/strong> <strong>the New Testament tells<\/strong> every believing sinner after Jesus\u2019 death to repent and be baptized to be saved (Acts 2:37\u201347).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Baptism consists of sprinkling, pouring, or immersion, <strong>but<\/strong> <strong>the New Testament teaches<\/strong> that baptism is a burial in water (Acts 8:38\u201339; 10:47\u201348; Rom. 6:4; Col. 2:12).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Baptism is optional after salvation, <strong>but Jesus said<\/strong>, \u201cHe that believeth and is baptized shall be saved: (Mark 16:16; cf. John 3:5; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Rom. 6:4; Gal. 3:27; Tit. 3:5).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">When Jesus comes, He will reign in a millennial kingdom on earth, <strong>but Jesus said<\/strong>, \u201cMy kingdom is not of this world\u201d (John 18:36; cf.
