Believers are such merely because they<strong> want <\/strong>to believe. Atheists ridicule them as \u201cpie-in-the-sky-by-and-by\u201d simpletons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Contrariwise, atheism portrays itself as the <strong>only<\/strong> path of rationality and reason (evincing the very exclusiveness and intolerance of which they accuse believers). One atheistic group, \u201cThe Coalition of Reason,\u201d implies in its name that theists are irrational. Is denial of an eternal supreme Being\u2019s existence reasonable (i.e., is said denial the correct conclusion on the basis of available evidence)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">We derive <em>atheism<\/em> from the Greek word, <em>theos<\/em> (god) and a prefixed <em>a <\/em>(the Greek letter, <em>alpha<\/em>), which has the force of negation. <em>Atheism<\/em> is thus the negation of the existence of God. Dr. Anthony G.N. Flew (1923\u20132010) was for many years the renowned champion of atheism. When he and Dr. Thomas B. Warren engaged in a debate on the existence of God (1976, University of North Texas campus, Denton, TX), Dr. Flew affirmed, \u201cI know that God does not exist.\u201d He obviously believed that he had reason on his side. However, Dr. Warren demonstrated that atheism rather represents a <strong>denial<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> and <strong>retreat<\/strong> <strong>from<\/strong> logic and reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Contrary to atheistic assertions, genuine Christian faith is in no wise \u201cblind.\u201d The Bible addresses itself to the mind and demands the proper use thereof. God urges us to reason about His Word: \u201cCome now and let us reason together\u2026\u201d (Isa. 1:18). Jesus always used flawless logic in His running debates with the religious leaders of His time. The \u201cfirst and great commandment\u201d includes loving God with \u201call thy mind,\u201d rather than abandoning reason (Mat. 22:37\u201338). Instead of ignoring or denying evidence, serious believers rely upon it: \u201cProve all things; hold fast that which is good\u201d (1 The. 5:21).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">Is it reasonable to assert that even such simple things as push pins or paper clips \u201cjust happen\u201d without designer or manufacturer? How much <strong>less<\/strong> \u201creasonable\u201d then is it to assert that our bodies, the earth, and the vast universe \u201cjust happened\u201d from a cosmic \u201caccident.\u201d Even the words, <em>intelligent design<\/em>, provoke <strong>irrational<\/strong> ire in atheists.
