Try as they might, it will take them quite a while longer to do so, if ever they do, for they have a big job on their hands. The Biblical heritage of the USA is not only prominent in our majestic Declaration of Independence and our unique Constitution, but in our civil and criminal codes as well. Only the ignorant or ideologically biased dare deny it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">In spite of the best efforts of such forces, the Bible remains deeply ingrained in the public consciousness. Common parlance proves this beyond doubt. Ironically, even the Bible\u2019s most avid enemies often employ its idioms (likely completely unaware of their origins), a few of which follow:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cShibboleth\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Jud. 12:6): A \u201ctest\u201d or password for entrance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cWashed my hands of the matter<\/strong>(Mat. 27:24): An attempt to avoid guilt for a culpable deed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cTouch the hem of the garment\u201d<\/strong>(Mat. 14:36): Referring to a bare minimum of effort or information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cApple of your eye\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Pro. 7:2, et al.): That which is greatly prized.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cNo room in the Inn\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Luke 2:7): The unavailability of accommodation or space (hotel, restaurant, parking, et al.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cPhysician, heal thyself\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Luke 4:23): One should take his own advice or tend to his own affairs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cEye for an eye\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Exo. 21:24, et al.): The penalty for injury of a neighbor under the law of Moses; retribution in kind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cArmageddon\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Rev. 16:15): Any catastrophic, climactic event.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cSkin of my teeth\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Job 19:20): The finest or smallest of margins, especially in avoiding or escaping some peril.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cA little bird told me\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Ecc. 10:20): Ascribed source of rumor\/information when one does not want to disclose the actual source.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cDavid and Goliath\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(1 Sam. 17:50, et al.): One who succeeds in the face of overwhelming odds or forces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cWeighed in the balances and found wanting\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Dan. 5:27): When one is put to the test and comes up short.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cFly in the ointment\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Ecc. 10:1): That which spoils, corrupts, pollutes, or renders an otherwise good thing useless.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cCasting your pearls before swine\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Mat. 7:6): Spending one\u2019s time, effort, or money in a vain attempt to influence another person<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cDrop in the bucket\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Isa. 40:15): Amounting to very little or nothing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cThe right hand knows not what the left hand is doing\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Mat. 6:3): Indicating great confidentiality or lack of communication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cAs old as Methuselah\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Gen. 5:27): He lived 969 years, so this expression is a hyperbole of advanced age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cGood Samaritan\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Luke 10:33): One who aids someone in distress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cGoing the second mile\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Mat. 5:41): Doing more than is expected\/required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cIf the blind lead the blind\u2026\u201d<\/strong>(Mat. 15:14): False teachers\/leaders who have na\u00efve followers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cA kingdom divided against itself\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Mat. 12:25): Description of any entity that experiences inner conflict.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cJudas kiss\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Luke 22:48): Any act of betrayal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u201cHandwriting on the wall\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(Dan. 5:5): That which is strongly implied or expected, often with a dire consequence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\">The foregoing are but samples of likely many others. Such expressions, drawn directly from the Bible, will not easily or quickly be erased from speech and literature.
