It was not in either case recorded in the New Testament. The apostles were saved <strong>before <\/strong>they received Holy Spirit baptism (John 15:3; Acts 2:1\u20134). Cornelius and his company learned how to be saved <strong>after <\/strong>\u201cthe Holy Spirit fell on\u201d them (10:44\u201348; 11:15).<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>Q<\/strong>\u2014 \u201cHow do we know Holy Spirit baptism is not the baptism of the Great Commission (Mat. 28: 19; Mark 16:16)?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>A<\/strong>\u2014<strong>The Lord <\/strong>administered Holy Spirit baptism only to a <strong>very few <\/strong>(the apostles, Cornelius and company). <strong>Men <\/strong>are commanded to administer Great Commission baptism to <strong>all mankind. <\/strong>One resulted in miraculous demonstrations. The other one results in salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>Q<\/strong>\u2014 \u201cHow do we know that only the apostles, not the 120 disciples and the multitude, were baptized in the Holy Spirit on Pentecost?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>A<\/strong>\u2014Jesus promised <strong>only <\/strong>the apostles that they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem (Acts. 1:2\u20135, 8). The \u201cthey\u201d upon whom the Holy Spirit came (2:1\u20134) were the \u201capostles\u201d of chapter 1:26. The recipients of this baptism were \u201call Galileans\u201d (2:7) (true of the apostles); it is unlikely that this fit the 120 disciples, and it certainly did not describe the multitude (vv. 9\u201311). When Peter began explaining the amazing events that drew the multitude together, he \u201cstood up with the eleven,\u201d not with the \u201c120 plus the eleven\u201d (v. 14). After Pentecost, none but the apostles worked miracles until the apostles laid their hands on seven disciples (2: 43; 3:1, 7; 5:12; 6:6\u20138). Those baptized and added to the church on Pentecost continued in \u201cthe apostles\u2019 teaching,\u201d not that of the apostles and the 120 (2:38\u201342).<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>Q\u2014\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cIsn\u2019t Holy Spirit baptism the \u2018gift of the Holy Spirit\u2019 of Acts 2:38?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>A<\/strong>\u2014<strong>No<\/strong>. As already noted, Holy Spirit baptism was administered to a very few, but the \u201cgift of the Holy Spirit\u201d is as general as remission of sins that follows baptism in water. In the case of Cornelius, Holy Spirit baptism occurred <strong>before <\/strong>water baptism (10:44\u201348), but \u201cthe gift of the Holy Spirit\u201d in Acts 2:38 is promised <strong>after <\/strong>water baptism.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong> Q<\/strong>\u2014 \u201cIsn\u2019t Holy Spirit baptism an evidence of salvation?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;\"><strong>A<\/strong>\u2014<strong>No<\/strong>. It was <strong>too early <\/strong>to be such at Cornelius\u2019s house, before he knew how to be saved (10:44\u201348; 11:15\u201316).
