{"id":8362,"date":"2020-08-11T21:31:50","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T21:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=8362"},"modified":"2026-02-20T19:48:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T19:48:35","slug":"was-jesus-mistaken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thescripturecache.com\/?p=8362","title":{"rendered":"Was Jesus Mistaken?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Views: 1<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">[<strong>Note: \u00a0<\/strong>This MS is available in larger font on our <strong>Brief Articles 3<\/strong> page<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Ten centuries before Jesus\u2019 birth, God, through the prophet Nathan, told David that He would set one of David\u2019s seed upon his (David\u2019s) throne in an eternal kingdom (2 Sam. 7:12\u201313).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Five centuries later, Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that in the days of the Roman Emperors, God would set up an indestructible kingdom that would stand forever (Dan. 2:44).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Rome ruled the world at the time the angel Gabriel told Mary she was to conceive by means of the Holy Spirit, and that her son, who would be Divinely named <em>Jesus<\/em>, would be the Son of God. Gabriel also stated that God would, in Him, fulfill Nathan\u2019s promise concerning David\u2019s throne and an everlasting kingdom (Luke 1:26\u201335).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The clear implication of Gabriel\u2019s message was that the establishment of Jesus\u2019 everlasting kingdom would coincide with His initial appearance among men. Such was the unquestionable understanding of Jesus Himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus preached, \u201cRepent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand\u201d (Mat. 4:17), as John did before Him (3:2). Jesus initially sent the twelve and the seventy to preach the same message (10:7; Luke 10:9). <em>At hand <\/em>means \u201cnearby,\u201d \u201cwithin reach.\u201d Did the Son of God preach, and authorize others to preach, a lie? Did He make a mistake?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus went about preaching \u201cthe gospel [good news] of the kingdom\u201d (9:35). Did He intentionally, or even ignorantly, raise false hopes in His hearers? Was He mistaken?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus told the apostles that some of them would live to \u201csee the kingdom come with power\u201d (Mark 9:1). Did He mislead them? Did He make a mistake?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus told Peter He would give to him the \u201ckeys of the kingdom\u201d (Mat. 16:19). If His kingdom was not established in Peter\u2019s lifetime, he could hardly use the \u201ckeys\u201d Jesus promised to give him. Did He make an empty promise to Peter? Was He mistaken?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Jesus instituted His supper\u2014to be eaten and drunk in His kingdom (Luke 22:19\u201320, 29\u201330). The apostles understood themselves to be in the kingdom, for they observed the supper (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:17\u201332). Did Jesus lead them astray about their being in the kingdom?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The kingdom came \u201cwith power\u201d in the lifetime of Jesus\u2019 contemporaries (Acts 2:1\u201347). As people obeyed the Gospel after Pentecost, they were \u201ddelivered&#8230;out of the power of darkness, and translated&#8230;into the kingdom of the Son&#8230;\u201d (Col. 1:13; cf., Acts 2:37\u201338, 41). To deny that the kingdom came in the first century is to affirm that Jesus was mistaken when He declared\u2014and commissioned others to declare\u2014that it was near them and that it would come in their lifetimes.
